Local secrets
We were back in Maine last week camping again. We didn't get a chance to pick blueberries last time, as it wasn't quite season yet. We ventured down to the local co-op to see if they could recommend a good farm someplace nearby. One of Jasper's Auntie Jens asked the clerk while we browsed the aisles.-The lady working at the register said that you can drive over to the fairgrounds and make a left. Then park in the lot about halfway up the big hill. There should be tons of blueberries up there. Free blueberries!
Not only free, but this was the same hill we'd been sent to about a month earlier to see a field of lupines. Clearly, this was the Giving Tree of hills!
It was a bit of a hike before we found the blueberry promised land. It was off the trail and one a bit of an incline. It took a little bit of off roading for me and Jasper to get over there, but there were LOTS of berries to be picked. After about 20 minutes of picking, poor Jasper was getting a bit bored and let us know about it. (That doesn't look like a comfortable angle, does it?) We had to sing him songs while we were picking. I have a much stronger appreciation for our field workers now, as I was bushed after 30 minutes or so. I can't imagine what berry picking must be like after a full day.
